Combined functional genomics and genetic approach in oyster to identify summer mortality-resistant markers ArchiMer
Huvet, Arnaud; Lapegue, Sylvie.
The oyster Crassostrea gigas has global distribution and for the past several years the highest annual production of any freshwater or marine organism. Economic importance of oysters motivates a great deal of biological research, which provides the most immediate scientific rationales for sequencing ESTs and developing genomic tools.

DNA testing for parentage verification in a conservation nucleus of Pantaneiro horse Genet. Mol. Biol.
Sereno,Fabiana Tavares Pires de Souza; Sereno,José Robson Bezerra; Vega-Pla,Jose Luis; Delgado,Juan Vicente.
We investigated the genealogy of the in situ conservation nucleus of the Pantaneiro horse using DNA microsatellites by evaluating 101 horses, the group consisting of 71 adult horses (3 stallions, 40 male and 31 mares) and 27 foals (14 colts and 13 fillies). Genomic DNA was extracted from hair roots and genotyped using 12 microsatellite markers (AHT4, AHT5, ASB2, ASB17, ASB23, HMS3 HMS6, HMS7, HTG4, HTG10, LEX33 and VHL20). The number of alleles per locus varied from 6 to 13, with a mean of 7.8 and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.544 to 0.734 (mean 0.644). The VLH20, ASB2, HTG10, ASB23 markers had a high (> 0.8) polymorphism information content and the total exclusion probability of the 12 microsatellite loci was 0.99. The genealogical study of...

Effects of inclustion and exposition times of sugar cane to calcium oxide on the physiologic and digestive parameters of Nellore heifers R. Bras. Zootec.
Pina,Douglas dos Santos; Valadares Filho,Sebastião de Campos; Azevêdo,José Augusto Gomes; Barbosa,Analívia Martins; Valadares,Rilene Ferreira Diniz; Detmann,Edenio.
It was aimed to evaluate the effect of inclusion and times of sugar cane exposition to whitewash on intake and total and partial digestibility of nutrients and ruminal parameters and to compare titanium dioxide and chromium oxide as markers to estimate fecal dry matter excretion and dry matter abomasal flow. It was used six rumen and abomasum cannulated Nellore females, with average body weight of 250 ± 19 kg, distributed in an incomplete 6 x 6 latin square design. The experiment was set in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme with three levels of whitewash (0; 0.5 or 1.0% natural matter) and two times of sugar cane storage (0 and 3 days). There was no effect of storage times neither interaction among levels of whitewash and storage times on the intake of nutrients....

Estimating the effects of population size and type on the accuracy of genetic maps Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ferreira,Adésio; Silva,Marcia Flores da; Silva,Luciano da Costa e; Cruz,Cosme Damião.
Based on simulation studies, it was shown that the type and size of experimental populations can exert an influence on the accuracy of genetic maps. A hypothetical genome map (one chromosome with nine equidistant molecular markers) was generated for the following population types: F2 with dominant and co-dominant markers, backcrossing, recombinant inbred lines (RIL) and double-haploid. The population sizes were 50, 100, 150, 200, 500 and 1000 individuals and 100 simulations were made for each population. The inaccuracies of the populations with the lowest number of individuals were shown by inversions in the order of the markers and the establishment of more than one linkage group in up to 38% of the simulations, depending on the population type. Stress...

Machado Neto,Otávio Rodrigues; Ladeira,Márcio Machado; Gonçalves,Tarcisio de Moraes; Lopes,Leandro Sâmia; Oliveira,Dalton Mendes de; Bassi,Marcelo Silva.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the dry matter intake (DMI) and nutrient consumption in Nellore and Red Norte steer finished in a feedlot and compare the actual and predicted values by NRC (2000), CNCPS 5.0 and BR-CORTE systems. Forty-one animals, 19 Nellore and 22 Red Norte steers, with initial live weight of 361 ± 31 kg and 367 ± 30 kg, respectively, were used. The experiment lasted 84 days, with 28 days for adaptation and 56 experimental days. The animals were weighed at the beginning and at end of each 28-day period after 16 hours fasting. The dry matter intake was estimated by LIPE, chrome oxide and indigestible dry matter (DMi) markers. There were no differences between Nellore and Red Norte DMI when expressed in kg/day (10.66 vs....

Current research studied the effect of partial replacing corn by glycerin and essential oils addition in the diet of Nellore bulls finished in feedlot on feed intake, animal performance and three markers were assessed to estimate apparent digestibility. Thirty bulls with average weight 400 ± 34.1 kg and 22 ± 2 months old were housed in collective pens (10 x 20 m2) for 63 days. The bulls were randomly assigned to 3 diets (10 bulls per treatment): CON – Control (without glycerin or Essential® oils); GLY – Glycerin (15% on dry matter - DM); and GEO – Glycerin (15% on DM) and Essential® oils (3 g animal day-1). Three different markers were used to estimate apparent digestibility in the diets: indigestible dry matter –iDM; indigestible neutral detergent fiber –...

N-alkanes to estimate voluntary forage intake of cattle using controlled-release capsules Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Dimas Estrasulas de; Manella,Marcelo de Queiroz; Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Lanna,Dante Pazzanese Duarte.
N-alkanes have been used as internal markers in digestibility trials with ruminants and non-ruminants for more than 20 years. In this study, two trials were conducted under different feeding regimes to (i) evaluate the release rate of n-alkanes of controlled-release capsules in the rumen of rumen-cannulated steers either grazing or restrained in metabolic stalls and (ii) estimate voluntary forage intake of the same steers in metabolic stalls. Six rumen-cannulated Nelore steers were allocated to individual metabolic stalls and were fed diets with varying forage to concentrate ratios (80:20, 60:40, and 40:60; respectively). Corn silage was the only forage source. In the grazing trial, the same steers were evaluated under three feeding managements (Brachiaria...

Perspectives on the application of biotechnology to assist the genetic enhancement of plantain and banana (Musa spp.) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Crouch,Jonathan H.; Vuylsteke,Dirk; Ortiz,Rodomiro.
Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are the most important tropical fruit crops. They form an integral component of the farming systems in the humid agroecological zones of the tropics. A broad array of applied cell and molecular techniques are increasingly being used worldwide to facilitate and enhance the handling and improvement of plantain and banana germplasm. Tissue culture is used for germplasm exchange, conservation and rapid multiplication, while in vitro seed germination (based on embryo culture or rescue) plays a critical role in generating hybrid plants. DNA marker systems have been developed in Musa to assist germplasm management, selection within the breeding pool or gene introgression from wild species, and for disease diagnosis. Likewise,...
